History

Born as an only daughter of the political Hartlovka Family, Marina was raised as a ‘trophy wife’ for future marriage arrangements, which would serve to benefit her family’s reputation. As a child, she was strictly forbidden to engage in child-like activities, such as going to the playground and befriending outsiders, in which her father deemed as ‘unladylike’. She then met Bartholomew (Barok Lovli) who was assigned as her butler, as per request by her mother before she got into a coma. Marina discovered her supernatural ability (Fortuna) which led her to commit ghost rituals in kindergarten; thus, she was homeschooled after frightening her classmates and teachers.

When Marina, at the age of 6, left her country for her father’s networking projects and unions, she met a spirited young boy who encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. This led her to experience a temporarily decent childhood and even developed a crush on the boy, who gave her the nickname ‘Rie-Rie’ after mistaking her name for ‘Marie’ (due to her tendency to stutter as a child), before she returned to her homeland when she turned 9 years old. Marina began cherishing the nickname, to the point of renaming herself.

When she turned 17, her crush on the boy remained, resulting in the constant rejection of multiple suitors, until she met Kieran, the suitor whom she had fallen madly in love with despite their six-year age gap. After discovering Kieran’s love affair with another woman, Marie decided to help him escape the marriage arrangement so he could elope with his lover. This resulted in Marie’s depression, that turned into self-loathing and suicidal tendencies.

Years later, at 23, Marie moved out of the country as she was arranged to be engaged to the son of an American-Russian prime minister, Aldrik Kozlov, who turned out to be a rapist after witnessing him having a violent sexual intercourse with a maid. To escape her doomed marriage with Bartholomew’s help, Marie took the maiden name of her mother, Lovli, and went into hiding at a haunted apartment where she encountered a ghost named Azriel—whom she soon falls in love with and became her uncertain boyfriend.

Personality

Despite coming across as a grumpy and anti-social brute, Marie is a good-natured young woman who acts like a clumsy and skittish air-head for her constantly absent thoughts. Due to her abilities and difficulty speaking, she can be seen as ‘creepily silent’, which made her appear unapproachable. Marie does not let her upbringing shape her personality as she remains optimistic, carefree, and physically active. She can be extremely stubborn and never hesitates to help others at the expense of her own mental and physical health. She dislikes being forced to do something that is against her will and goes as far as to run away.

One of Marie’s major flaws is her insecurity, but she does not express it nor think ill of others due to her humble nature, but it would gradually turn her depressed. She’ll try to imitate other people’s behaviors and habits to the point of it burning her out, hinting that she loathes herself because of the way others always seem to avoid her, also making her quite aware of the impression she gives to people, and a bit of a people pleaser. Marie can get submissive and highly sexual as a coping mechanism and acts before thinking, therefore reckless and impulsive. She also seems indifferent with the concept of death.

Choosing to face and solve problems straightforwardly is one of Marie’s virtues, as long as she does it with actions, as she is terrible at expressing her feelings with words, much less talking. She is prone to panic, prefers to do things on her own, and takes immediate responsibility for her mistakes. Marie has once experienced an obsession with Kieran that destroyed her self-esteem. After meeting Azriel and developing genuine romantic feelings for him, Marie begins to mature while rejecting his frequent advances in fear of a possible heartbreak, preventing them from labelling their relationship.

Appearance

Physical

Marie was practically designed after Maerichii’s persona; having white hair and black eyes with white star-shaped pupils. Her original hair was long and wavy before she cut it into a tomboyish side-tails hairstyle to be seen as less ‘fancy’ by others. She has fair skin and a slim yet athletic physique.

Outfit

Before abandoning her surname ‘Hartlovka’, Marie wore modest clothing, such as frilly long dresses with long sleeves, and darker colors. After escaping from her marriage arrangement with Aldrik, she adapted to 2000’s streetwear style like ‘harajuku’, similar to Lottie from Ageha in Wonderland. She would wear wigs and contact lenses to hide her identity from being possibly caught by her father’s acquaintances. Casually, she dresses in sleepwear, gym wear, and oversized clothing.

Skills & Abilities

Fortuna

Inherited from her mother, Marie can see, touch, and hear ghosts. This helps her progress more in her forensics studies as the victims in ghost forms come to her for help and give her clues into learning the truth behind their deaths. Her skill is similar to another OC named Amelia in Ageha in Wonderland, who can also interact with ghosts, but only Marie is able to touch them physically. In Ace of Spades, this skill is called ‘Fortuna’. This can be passed onto others by sharing blood.

Relationships

Azriel Adair

Azriel is the first ghost that Marie can touch and understand despite their language barriers. She initially disliked Azriel due to his noisy, cocky, and much more to his flirtatious behavior that always make her disturbed, sometimes even pissed off. She had an impression that he might have lived as one of the destructive and manipulative men Bartholomew warned her about, until she witnessed the truthful and vulnerable side of him. This led to her find a commonality between her and Azriel, such as running away from home and lacking directions in their lives as adults—growing sympathy for him.

After coming to good terms with Azriel, she began to admire him that she adapted to his hobbies and manner of speaking, the same way she learned from the boy in her childhood, whom she had forgotten over the years—including being tolerant of his seductive advances. Marie soon found herself unable to stop worrying and thinking about Azriel, so she began questioning if it was normal to have feelings for someone who's already dead. Upon discovering that Azriel was the same boy from her childhood, Marie’s shock evolved into immense grief, and grew incredibly conscious about her relationship with the latter. Nevertheless, Marie embraces these romantic feelings which turned her very protective of Azriel.

Bartholomew Lovli

Marie’s loyal butler and mentor, whom she likes to call ‘old man’ or ‘old geezer’. He can see ghosts, as well. She sees him as a father figure and would always come to him for advice and assistance, as Bartholomew sees her as his daughter and someone to protect at all costs. She is comfortable around him. In different universes, Bartholomew would serve as a guide or a side character to assist in conflicts. Marie would sometimes see Bartholomew in an antagonistic perspective, and questions his suspicious behavior, much to avoid having contact with him as much as possible. She gets worried that her father might track her down by tormenting Bartholomew, or if Bartholomew himself decides to expose her whereabouts.

Kieran Tabachnik

In this universe, Kieran is an aspiring doctor as he came from a family that specializes in medicine. His parents operated on Marguerite, which connected them to Marie’s father. He was Marie’s previous suitor, who abandoned their marriage arrangement to elope with his fake lover. While he is gentle and kind-hearted, he neglected Marie’s feelings as he was focused more on escaping, and left Marie with a broken heart.

Aldrik Kozlov

Marie’s current suitor, who proved to be a rapist and has abused and traumatized many women in the past. Aldrik accepted the marriage offer solely because he lusted after her. He sought to control and manipulate her into submitting to him through relentless abuse. He is the person Marie hates and fears the most, along with her father.

Monopoly Hartlovka

Marie’s cold-hearted father, corrupted by greed, vain, and glory. He raised Marie like a machine to become someone’s wife and prostitute, and has no regard for her feelings and suffering. Monopoly uses Marguerite’s coma to degrade Marie when she talks back. He is the person Marie hated the most, along with Aldrik. In Ace of Spades, a universe where Monopoly won the election and had power over the country, he implanted an injector in Marie’s brain to train her to become a weapon against political rivals—sometimes, he would task her to seduce his targets.

Marguerite Lovli

Marie’s mother, who got into a coma after having a mental breakdown. Marie has rarely seen or interacted with her mother. At the brink of unconsciousness after giving birth to Marie, Marguerite warned Bartholomew that she had seen a vision of her daughter’s terrible future when she first looked into her young daughter’s eyes, where Marie was forced to obey her future suitor’s commands and become a sex doll. She requested Bartholomew to kill her before she suffers, however, Bartholomew chose to let Marie grow up and vowed that he’d prevent such a fate.

Stella Miriam

Marie's third-cousin of her mother’s side, who also inherited Fortuna, albeit with a function that makes Stella see psychedelic patterns, including ghosts, instead of the future. She works as a lingerie model in the same studio as Marie’s part-time job. Stella enjoys pulling Marie out of her comfort zone, much to the latter's hesitation, and sometimes even dread. She likes to gift Marie expensive lingerie and gives her advice on make-up, fashion, and how to socialize properly. She would also teach Marie English so she can communicate with Azriel better.

Lukas Orlov

Marie’s schoolmate who is one of the few people that know her true identity.
