“TBA”

Azrael is the main antagonist of Dies Irae. He is the deceased twin brother of Michael, who resurrected as the Apostle—Maria la Fata’s guardian angel and only executioner that serves a major role in performing the ritual Dies Irae. Possessing the fragments of the devil’s soul, Azrael is a corrupted spirit whose life is linked to Maria la Fata’s.

History

As twins, Michael and Gabriel were considered to be ‘monstrous’ and ‘satanic’ children. While Gabriel is confused and ignorant to the public spite, Michael is satisfied with being perceived as inhuman, which had fueled his pride at a very young age. When the twins developed their sacred abilities, they were then treated like saints. This led Michael to discover the foolish nature of humanity, and he sought to become the ideal human being to exceed the town, using Christ as his ideal image. Even though Michael had controlling tendencies, he sought to inspire his brothers, especially Gabriel, and reshape them to become ‘better humans’—as the eldest among them.

The glimpse of young Maria la Fata in her pleasant childhood captivated Michael, so he encouraged his twin brother to write a fairytale story about her to hopefully inspire the town into becoming as saintly as Maria, but it soon turned into the discovery of her traumatic past, including his family’s dark history as the descendants of the Vella Malvagia cult that caused Maria la Fata’s suffering and received praise for their deceptive sacrifices. Aching to gain control over Gardenia and manage its polluted religious influence, Michael diligently gained the church’s favor to win the highest papal position of Gardenia, prestigious enough that even his own parents could not sabotage his goal.

After the death of his parents, Michael’s coronation was disturbed by Gabriel, who publicly revealed the eventual arrival of Maria la Fata and the calamity of Dies Irae that would occur once Michael is crowned as high priest, until Michael commanded his apprehension. Overwhelmed by his twin brother’s discovery, Michael confronts him out of prison about his betrayal, but ends up getting into a violent brawl with him, falling to his demise after being beheaded. As Azrael, he sought to witness Dies Irae for himself, thus becoming authoritative over Maria la Fata’s movements. In one of the different endings of the story, he betrays Mary to rejoice in the madness of Gardenia.

Humanity

Since childhood, Michael had shown signs of apathy and extreme conceit that intimidated most people, especially his twin brother. He used the fear of Gardenia’s townspeople to take in the pleasure of being something ‘different’ than the common man, thus perceiving himself (and claiming to be) as the perfect image of man. However, as the eldest, Michael was most merciful to his brothers, especially Jhudiel, who idolized him greatly. Remaining vigilant yet narcissistic, his behavior barely differed as he grew up, even after the discovery of his family's history. He became more egotistical after rising above his peers.

Becoming Azrael worsened him mentally and morally, as he became aware that his soul has defied death. His encounter with Maria la Fata—the true figure of perfection— threatened his ego which caused him to act intimately possessive of her and was eager to fulfill his role as her guide towards Dies Irae, hoping to witness her sacred death. He despised seeing Maria behave ‘humanly’, above all getting close with his twin brother, his murderer. Azrael’s depraved state as a spirit turned him excessively wrathful, notably sadistic and deranged, as he found pleasure in the misery of the likes of his brothers that he deems peasants.

Appearance

Azrael possesses a gracile build and deathly muted complexion. His hair remained unkept since his death, gaining spiral-like curls through each tip as an effect. His eyes are silver, the genetic trademark of the Amante Family, and they're described to be lifeless and detached by Maria. A lone cross earring hangs on his left ear, and the markings around his neck and soiled tears below his eyes mark the permanent traces of his decapitation. His arms (including hair color) are tainted by black gradients as a sign of corruption. As Michael, he had long and curly golden hair.
