“TBA”

Maria la Fata, also known as ‘Mary’, is a protagonist of Lamento: Dies Irae. She is the immortalised messiah after the first Christ’s crucifixion. She was resurrected upon the awakening of the Apostle, Azrael, to become the executioner of the Amante brothers. The events of her life affect the fate of the world; must she die, the world dies with her.

History

Centuries after Christ’s sacrifice, Maria’s mysterious birth cured the deadly plague. She was raised by a cult called Vella Malvagia that deemed her the ‘Mother of the Second Saviour’. Maria spent her childhood in a rural village as a figure of salvation and hope for her abilities to grant miracles like Christ. At a young age, she was already aware of humanity’s flaws, including her own. She was mistreated yet worshipped, and became obsessed with the concept of dying. At the age of 19, her beauty turned her into a figure of desire, and many men lusted after her. The only man who truly loved her was an unnamed priest at a local chapel.

When the Vella Malvagia demanded her to conceive a child to replace Christ, Maria refused, claiming that she was Christ herself. She was then gang raped, beaten up, and tormented until her abilities manifested into a curse, killing the cult members. She sought forgiveness from the priest, who died from her curse after promising to grant her true happiness. Maria’s sorrow only aggravated her curse, so she coped by taking more lives until she gave herself up to be sentenced to death. Rejoicing at her fate, Maria sang the chant of ‘Dies Irae, Dies Illa’, leading the villagers into taking their own lives in pure madness as she burns to become immortal.

Due to the chant, Maria sealed the ritual into her fate after discovering that the true purpose behind her birth was to cleanse humanity by awaiting the arrival of the Apostle, and sacrificing seven sinners to strip her of her immortality, before fulfilling Dies Irae with her final death. In one of the different endings of the story, she is betrayed by Azrael, who sought to witness true ‘damnation’ in Gardenia after the traumatic events, and returned to eternal slumber, albeit forced.

Humanity

Mary is described as a strange yet desolate and patient young woman for her odd way of speech and how she constantly wears a saintly smile on her face, even in suffering. Her behavior alters depending on an individual’s perception of her, further concealing her true personality from prying minds, such as portraying herself as a saint towards Jhudiel, but a seductress, advisor, and an obedient maid to the Amante brothers. Behind her polite, angelic, and graceful demeanor buries a nihilistic morality that causes her to view humanity as something she could merely fool and demoralise, which also makes her manipulative.

Her obsession with death causes her to be sadistic and indifferent to other people’s agony, including her own—except for children like Jhudiel, whom she sympathised with and wept for. As inhuman as Mary is, she possesses human flaws that she fails to recognise in herself, such as being unaware of her own tears when she weeps, and letting her emotions and trauma of pain (caused by her curse) shatter her stoic facade. Although her genuine identity remains inexplicable even if she were to disclose it, the majority of the characters, especially Michael, perceive her as a sorrowful and pitiful woman who is confused about the appeal and evolution of the world, but still has the heart to mourn for the deceased.

Appearance

Mary is often compared to both an angel and a succubus, having a graceful yet fairy-like beauty that entranced men and daunted women, but haunted priests, children, and animals. Her skin is fair, and her hair is long and wavy, reaching down her waist. Her eye colour is a paler shade of red, akin to the main colour of the morganite jewel. The middle of her chest lies a cross-shaped scar, the symbol of her immortality, which also serves as a sacrificial mark.
